Austin Buddhist Vihara Celebrates Sri Lankan Independence Day and Hosts Charity Fundraiser

Austin, TX — February 8, 2026 – Today, the Austin Buddhist Vihara community came together in a vibrant celebration of Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day, commemorating the nation’s freedom from British rule on February 4, 1948. The morning event served as a bridge connecting the rich heritage of Sri Lanka to the younger generation here in Texas. Led by Ms. Carey, the students of the Dhamma School took center stage, delivering a heartfelt performance that included patriotic songs, musical instrumentals, and inspiring speeches. Their presentations eloquently highlighted the history, culture, and enduring importance of independence, filling the hall with pride.

The celebration was graced by the presence of the Vihara’s resident monks, who offered spiritual guidance to the attendees. In their address, they spoke on the Buddhist religious relevance of independence, emphasizing values of freedom, responsibility, and the cultivation of peace within one’s own mind and community. Following the cultural program, members of the Vihara hosted a special ceremony and treat, fostering a warm atmosphere of fellowship where families and friends could unite in gratitude for their heritage.

The festivities were followed by a lively charity bake sale organized to support the continuity of the temple. We would like to extend a special thanks to the devoted community members who organized this fundraising effort. We recognize that an event of this scale relies heavily on the generosity of our members—from the manual labor involved in setup and sales to the donations of food and resources. Your tireless dedication and hard work are the lifeblood of the Austin Buddhist Vihara, ensuring we can continue to serve as a sanctuary for the community.

May the Triple Gem bless you!
